Workshop Summer 2024: John Rutter's Feel the Spirit

Sunday 23 June 2024, Old Village Hall

Feel the Spirit is John Rutter's setting of 7 spirituals for mezzo-soprano soloist and choir:
  • Joshua fit the battle of Jericho
  • Steal away
  • I got a robe
  • Sometimes I feel like a motherless child
  • Every time I feel the spirit
  • Deep river
  • When the saints go marching in
As you may already recognise from the list, they cover a wide range of emotions, some sombre, some tranquil, some stirring.

Ian's choice of this piece just seemed to hit the spot with us singers - not too difficult and yet with enough challenges to make the day enjoyable. The Spirituals are full of emotion from joy to sadness and always excitement. We did not engage a professional mezzo, but divided the solos amongst choir members. In particular we shall long remember Clare's lovely solo in Steal Away. Richard Dunster-Sigtermans gave us a great accompaniment on the keyboard and brought the music to life with its syncopated rhythms and jazz elements.
