Christmas concert 2022
Friday 16th December 2022, at 7.30 in St Peter's Church, Walgrave, Northants.
The centrepiece of our Christmas concert 2022 was Mozart's Dixit and Magnificat (K193 in the Köchel catalogue). This is less often performed, and sets two pieces from the Latin Vespers (evensong service). Though short, less than 11 minutes, it is a good sing for the choir with just a few solo interjections, and we felt we brought some good style and liveliness to it. We rounded out the concert with Christmas motets and carols, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams with his Fantasia on Christmas Carols, an exciting and atmospheric arrangement of some familiar carols. There were also carols for the audience to join in, and, on such a cold night, the imagery of Good King Wenceslas was never more appropriate. We very much enjoyed performing with our guest organist, Richard Dunster-Sigtermans. Unfortunately our booked baritone soloist, Michael Dewis, had to pull out at a late moment due to illness, so we were very grateful to Theo Perry for standing in so ably at short notice. |
