Christmas concert 2019
For our Christmas concert we will be performing Antonín Dvořák Mass in D - The Lužany Mass - which was composed for the consecration of the new chapel constructed at the Lužany castle in Western Bohemia, in what is now the Czech Republic (right).
The concert will be on 20th December 2019 at 7.30pm in St. Peter's Church, Walgrave. We will also, of course, be singing some Christmas carols. Christmas Term starts on 12th September 2019 with a break at half term on 24th October. Rehearsals are on Thursdays at Walgrave Baptist Church, 4 Gold St, Walgrave, Northants NN6 9QE from 7.30 to 9.30pm. |
Dvořák’s Mass in D major was instigated by leading architect and patron of the arts Josef Hlávka, later the founder and first president of the Czech Academy of Sciences. In 1886 Hlávka had a new chapel built at his summer residence, a castle in Lužany in Western Bohemia. When the chapel was to be consecrated the following year, he asked his friend Dvořák to write a new mass for the occasion. Dvořák, who thought very highly of Hlávka, was glad to oblige and wrote a mass for solos, choir and organ. He completed the work within three months.
